Birdwatching in Sinharaja & Bundala

Thirty-four endemic bird species, and the famous mixed-species feeding flocks of Sinharaja.

Half day to multi-day Sinharaja Rainforest & Bundala National Park Nov–Apr for migrants · endemics year-round

Sri Lanka has thirty-four endemic bird species and most of them live in the wet-zone rainforest at Sinharaja. The site is best known among birders for its mixed-species feeding flocks — dozens of birds of a dozen species moving through the canopy together, led by the orange-billed babbler and the crested drongo. Standing still while one passes over you is the single best hour of birding on the island.

Bundala, down on the dry southern coast, is the counterpart: a Ramsar wetland where greater flamingos, painted storks, spoonbills and thousands of migratory waders gather from November onwards. We use guides who know the calls, which is what actually makes the difference between a nice walk and a serious list.
