Cycling Through the Cultural Triangle
Paddy bunds, irrigation tanks and thousand-year-old ruins, on the small roads a vehicle cannot use.
Rural Sri Lanka is best seen at cycling pace, because the interesting roads are the small ones. Around Polonnaruwa you can ride the entire archaeological park — it is flat, shaded and laid out for exactly this — stopping at the Gal Vihara Buddhas and the Quadrangle without ever getting back in a car. Around Sigiriya and Habarana the routes run along paddy bunds and irrigation tanks built more than a thousand years ago.
The hill country is a harder, more rewarding proposition, with real climbing and tea estate views as the payoff. All rides are guided, use well-maintained hybrids or hardtails with helmets, and are followed by a support vehicle carrying water and spares — so you can stop pedalling whenever you have had enough.
