The Knuckles range is what the hill country looks like before tourism arrives. A UNESCO World Heritage conservation forest of cloud forest, montane grassland and deep valleys, it holds an extraordinary density of endemic amphibians and reptiles and a handful of villages still farming terraced cardamom and paddy.
Day hikes take in Mini World's End and the Riverston viewpoints. The better experience is two or three days point-to-point with a night in a village homestay, which is the only way to be up there at dawn when the valleys fill with cloud. Trails are poorly marked and leeches are a fact of life in the wet months, so a licensed guide is not optional here.
