Arugam Bay
Sri Lanka’s premier surf point
Arugam Bay is a surf town first and everything else second. The main point is a long, forgiving right-hander that works from May through September and draws surfers from all over the world; Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Okanda spread the crowd along the coast.
Off the water, the lagoons behind town are full of birds and crocodiles, Kumana National Park is a short drive south, and elephants regularly cross the road at dusk. The town itself is one dusty street of guesthouses, surf shops and open-air restaurants, and that is precisely the appeal.
